About Us

Nathan and Aleta Klassen own and farm Nith Valley Organics https://nithvalleyorganics.ca We are 15 mins outside of Kitchener Ontario. NVO is a certified organic vegetable farm also raising pastured chicken and lamb. We sell predominantly at farmers markets in Toronto, maintain an online store www.localline.ca/nith-valley-organics, and also maintain some wholesale patrons. We grow a variety of vegetables year round in our greenhouses and high tunnels. The long term goal of the farm is to work towards being as sustainably responsible as we can for ourselves, employees, the environment and the communities we grow for.

Pack House Manager

Permanent Full time, Year Round Position Starting as soon as possible.

The Pack House Manager position entails harvesting a variety of crops, washing, and packing for wholesale orders and three markets a week. Beyond these duties, there is no shortage of work of all kinds. From marketing, sales, livestock management and the online store, construction and even ongoing farmer led research. We strongly encourage employees to take on roles that suit their strengths beyond their normal duties.

We try to keep our workdays 8 to 5pm Monday to Friday with the possibility of work on weekends, if wanted. The nature of the Assistant Field Manager work load ebbs and flows, so some schedule variability is appreciated for the position. Longer hours are not usually needed more than one day in a work week. We are flexible as to which hours someone wants to work.

Assets 

  • 1-2 years of experience growing vegetable crops 
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions – hot/cold/humid/wind/rain/snow
  • In depth knowledge on how to harvest and store vegetable crops to maintain quality and freshness
  • Familiar with the FIFO method 
  • Fluent in English with good communication skills 
  • Experience in a management/supervisory position
  • Passion for growing food crops 
  • Organized and self driven with the ability to organize activities for others 
  • Comfortable with driving large vehicles- market van and tractor – willing to train 
  • Personal transportation – no bus/public transit available 

Responsibilities 

  • Provide direction to harvest crew
    • how/where to harvest crops and in what quantities
  • Picking/packing for three weekly markets
    • Record keeping
    • Quality control 
  • Packing wholesale orders
    • Maintaining high standards of quality that aline with our wholesale partners
  • Keeping detailed records of harvests
    • Inline with our organic certification body  
  • Manage one or more weekly markets
    • Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday 
    • Market shifts are around 10 – 12 hrs long 

Renumeration

We offer a competitive wage of $17+ per hour, based on experience

Greenhouse Manager

Beyond these duties, there is no shortage of work of all kinds. From marketing, sales, livestock management and the online store, construction and even ongoing farmer led research. We strongly encourage employees to take on roles that suit their strengths beyond their normal duties.

  • Fertilizing plants on a weekly basis in the summer
    • Record keeping
  • Keeping detailed records of harvests
    • Inline with our organic certification body  
  • Ideally Manage one weekly market or cross train to be available for filling in when needed
    • Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday 
    • Market shifts are around 10 – 12 hrs long
